Anotace
Just as its title implies, The Global Society presents sociology as a way of understanding the world, not just individual societies. With a comparative focus, this text de-emphasizes U.S. society in favor of global sociology. Another key feature is the incorporation of sociological theory throughout the text, within discussions of specific topics, rather than following the traditional organization of relegating the topic to a separate chapter. These two concepts, global-orientation and theory-application, are highlighted in two special boxes found in each chapter: one focusing on global/comparative issues, the other on sociological research. A unique chapter has also been developed on modernity. It explores classic statements as well as new structures evolved from the theories of modernization, dependency, and world-systems.
