The first three sections review relevant research findings on the molecular control of cellular differentiation and on normal and disordered haematopoiesis. Topics covered include haematopoietic growth factors and their receptors; genes in early haematopoiesis; stem cell development; structure and activation of the erythropoietin receptor; oncogenes related to haematopoietic malignancy; the biology of chronic myelogenous leukaemia; and the biology of interleukin-6. The final section describes several emerging clinical applications of this research, such as clinical use of cytokines, tolerance induction with monoclonal antibodies, and gene transfer into haematopoietic stem cells.
