Anotace

Histological diagnosis is a largely visual process dependent on accurate analysis of tissue architecture. Becoming an 'expert' histopathologist requires building up a huge knowledge of meaningful 'patterns' acquired by examinging thousands of specimens. By analysing what these patterns actually are and presenting them logically, Drs Al-Nafussi and Hughes aim to give the trainee pathologist quicker and more thorough access to this expert knowledge. The book is divided into three sections, the first including fourteen chapters describing different histological patterns, listing sub-patterns and supplying an index of entities belonging to each subpattern. These indexes are designed to guide the pathologist from identification of the architectural pattern. These indexes are designed to guide the pathologist from identification of the architectural pattern of a lesion to a list of possible diagnoses which can be examined in more detail in the A-Z section, Section Two. In the alphabetical list of tumours and tumour-like conditions, each entity is described in a standard format which moves from an entity's clinical features, through a panoramic view of the lesion and a differential diagnosis section to a section on special techniques. The third section is a system index which enables a 'narrowing down' of the differential diagnosis according to the tissue or organ from which the specimen was taken. This is a bench book that provides a carefully structured guide through the maze of differing cell structures which make up various tumour types. Histological Diagnosis of Tumours by Pattern Analysis will be an invaluable bench guide to histopathologists and trainee pathologists in the diagnosis of tumour and tumour-like conditions. The structure of the atlas mirrors the diagnostic approach used by pathologists, that is, analysis of architectural and cytological features, special stains and other auxiliary techniques. The atlas is divided into three sections; section 1 defines patterns or sub-patterns, and lists the entities belonging to each part; section 2 provides an A-Z list of tumour and tumour-like conditions; and section 3 serves as a system index with lists of entities belonging to each p[attern or sub-pattern. A vast number of important entities are illustrated; indeed, with over 1000 colour photographs, this book will prove essential reading for all pathologists in training.
