For the pathologist or rheumatologist, the text offers a diagnostic manual of connective tissue histopathology. For academic and research workers, the volume describes the present state of understanding of each of the principal human connective tissue diseases and how this knowledge has been gained. Part I consists of an extensive account of normal mammalian connective tissue, the biochemistry, macromolecular organization, cytology, histology and anatomy. Part II examines the responses of the connective tissues to disease. The immunological basis of these is followed by chapters on their biomechanics and pharmacology. Part III, the largest, systematically describes the inherited and acquired connective tissue diseases of man. The work is intended as a reference work for diagnostic pathologists but goes further, providing an up-to-date account of the clinical presentation of each disease, of its inheritability and the influence of treatment on pathology and progress.
