Anotace

In the thirteenth century the Church was at the height of its power, its position buttressed by able popes, brilliant theologians, and a competent and wide-ranging administration. At the same time the face of Europe was being transformed: cities were rising, the economy was expanding, and the monarchies, particularly in France and England, were rapidly becoming nation states. It is in this context that the last and greatest of the medieval Church-State disputes, that between Boniface VIII and Philip the Fair, must be viewed, for in taking on France Boniface was engaging in a battle with a power whose political conceptions and national self-awareness were increasingly modern in tone and wholly antithetical to the Church's hierarchical view of society. Boniface's pontificate marks the beginning of the decline of the power and glory of the Medieval Papacy.
