Rok: 2003 AnotaceContact lenses have become a popular option for vision correction as well as a valuable tool for the treatment of many serious ophthalmic disorders. Like any therapeutic tool, however, they can have both positive and negative effects on the eye. They affect the physiology and metabolism of the anterior ocular segments, they alter the topography of the cornea, and they compromise the immunology of the eye. In many cases these complications are difficult to distinguish from a classic ophthalmic disease. Ophthalmologists and optometrists require comprehensive, specialized knowledge not just in the fitting and handling of contact lenses but also with regard to possible complications. The author has drawn on years of practical experience to summarize the necessary information in a clear and concise form: comprehensive information on the complex issue of contact lens complications and the problems associated with the wearing of contact lenses; etiologic differentiation of the various disorders; optimum patient selection and lens prescription; clear graphics and tables for fast reference and comparison; and prophylactic measures and practical management guidelines. The colour illustrations of lesions of the eyelids, conjunctiva, and cornea that can result from contact lens use provide a valuable recognition guide for ophthalmologists and optometrists.
