Anotace

Hungarian music has interested and appealed to European audiences for the past two hundred years. Such great composers as Haydn and Beethoven, among others, liked to use elements of Hungarian folk music in their works, and Franz Liszt, in his works as well as his life, drew attention to composed Hungarian music. More recently, the two outstanding Hungarian composers of this century, Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, placed before the world the genuine music of Hungary, allowing it to be rediscovered by means of compositions that reach back to the roots, to the ancient folk song. Still, however, few realize that the past two hundred years do not contain the whole story of Hungarian music. This survey by Bence Szabolcsi (1899-1973), the eminent musicologist, guides readers back to its sources and traces its development, over a thousand years, to the modern works of world-wide renown. This study is not confined to simple description or to a survey of major composers; the author liberally illustrates his narrative with musical scores and, further, supplies an insight into the world of Hungarian music. Thus, this book is both a valuable compilation of information for musicians and musicologists and, for music-lovers, an important aid to understanding the genius and art of contemporary music, particularly that of Béla Bartók.
