He is also a businessman and a Conservative member of the House of Lords.Ridley is best known for his writings on science, the environment, and economics. He has written several science books including The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature (1994), Genome (1999) and The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves (2010). In 2011, he won the Hayek Prize, which "honors the book published within the past two years that best reflects Hayek’s vision of economic and individual liberty." Ridley also gave the Angus Millar Lecture on "scientific heresy" at the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in 2011. He was recently elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and won the Julian Simon award in March 2012.His popular TED conference talk, "When Ideas Have Sex", has over 2 million views. Ridley argues that population growth has driven human development because connections between individuals lead to the development of new ideas.Ridley was chairman of the UK bank Northern Rock from 2004 to 2007, during which period Northern Rock experienced the first run on a British bank in 150 years. Ridley chose to resign, and the bank was bailed out by the UK government leading to the nationalisation of Northern Rock. |
